The Han Emperor, enamored with beauty, longs for a nation, seeking for many years but to no avail. The Yang family has a daughter who has just grown up, raised in a deep boudoir, unknown to the world. Naturally beautiful, she cannot be hidden; one day she is chosen to be by the emperor's side. A glance and a smile bring forth a hundred charms, the beauty of the six palaces pales in comparison.
In the chilly spring, she is bathed in the Huqing Pool, the warm spring water smooth as cream. The maidservants help her up, delicate and weak, just beginning to receive the emperor's favor. With cloud-like hair and flower-like face, adorned with golden hairpins, she spends the spring night in a warm hibiscus tent. The spring night is too short, and the sun rises high; from then on, the emperor does not attend morning court.
Delighting in feasts, there is no leisure; spring outings are for day, and nights are for revelry. In the harem, there are three thousand beauties, all the emperor's affection rests on one. In the golden chamber, she is adorned for the night, and after the banquet in the jade tower, they are drunk with spring. Sisters and brothers are all granted land, pitying the glory that brings wealth to the family. Thus, it makes parents across the world feel, not valuing the birth of sons over daughters.
In the high palace, one enters the blue clouds, the sound of celestial music wafts everywhere. Slow songs and gentle dances with silk and bamboo, the emperor gazes all day, never satisfied. The drums of Yuyang shake the earth, startling the melody of the rainbow dress. The smoke and dust rise from the nine-fold city gates, thousands of chariots and horses head southwest.
The emerald carriage sways and stops, a hundred miles west of the capital. The six armies do not move, helplessly, the beautiful one dies before the horse. Flower ornaments fall to the ground, no one picks them up, the green hairpin and golden sparrow hairpin lie abandoned. The emperor covers his face, unable to save her, looking back as blood and tears flow together.
Yellow dust spreads, the wind is bleak, the cloud path winds up to the Sword Pavilion. Few people walk under Mount Emei, the flags lack luster, the sunlight is dim. The waters of the Shu River are green, the mountains of Shu are blue, the holy ruler's feelings linger day and night. The moon seen from the palace brings sorrow, the night rain sounds like a broken heart.
The heavens spin and the earth turns, the dragon chariot hesitates here, unable to leave. At the foot of Mawei Slope, in the mud, the beautiful face is unseen, only emptiness remains. The emperor and ministers look at each other, both drenched in tears, gazing eastward at the capital, trusting the horses to return.
Returning, the pond and garden remain the same, the lotus in Taiye and the willow in Weiyang. The lotus is like a face, the willow like eyebrows; how can one not shed tears at this? On the day when peach and plum blossoms bloom in spring, and when autumn rain falls, the leaves of the parasol tree drop. In the western palace and southern inner court, there is much autumn grass, fallen leaves cover the steps, red and uncleaned.
The disciples of the pear garden have white hair, the maid in the pepper room has aged. In the evening palace, fireflies fly quietly, a lonely lamp burns out, unable to sleep. The slow sound of the bell and drum marks the beginning of the long night, the bright Milky Way yearns for dawn. The cold tiles of the mandarin duck roof, who shares the heavy frost with me? Year after year, the separation of life and death, the soul has never entered my dreams.
The Taoist from Linqiong, a guest from Hongdu, can summon souls with sincerity. To comfort the emperor's restless thoughts, he instructs the alchemist to search diligently. Riding the wind and controlling the air, rushing like lightning, seeking everywhere in heaven and earth. Up to the azure sky and down to the yellow springs, both places are vast and unseen.
Suddenly, I hear there are immortal mountains at sea, the mountains are in the ethereal mist. The exquisite towers rise with five clouds, among them many fairies are graceful. In the midst is a person named Taizhen, with snow-like skin and flower-like beauty, distinct and charming.
At the golden gate of the western chamber, I knock on the jade lock, turning to have Xiaoyu report the double success. I hear that the Han Emperor's envoy has come, startling my soul in the nine-flower tent. I put on my clothes and push the pillow, pacing back and forth, the pearl curtain and silver screen open gracefully. My cloud-like hair is half-tilted from sleep, the flower crown is disheveled as I come down the hall. The wind blows the fairy garments, fluttering like a dance of rainbow dress. The jade face is lonely, tears on the railing, a branch of pear blossoms brings spring rain.
With affectionate gazes, I thank the emperor; after parting, our voices and images are both vague. In the Zhaoyang Palace, love is severed; in the Penglai Palace, the sun and moon last long. Looking back down at the human world, I see no Chang'an, only dust and mist. I can only send old items to express deep feelings, the gold hairpin and the golden hairpin are sent away. The hairpin leaves a piece, the hairpin splits the golden hairpin, but as long as the heart is as firm as gold, we will meet again in heaven and earth.
Before parting, I earnestly send words, in the words are vows known to both hearts. On the seventh day of the seventh month in the Changsheng Palace, at midnight when no one speaks privately. In heaven, I wish to be a pair of winged birds; on earth, I wish to be a branch of intertwined trees. Heaven and earth may have their ends, but this hatred is endless.
